Gadget Talk: Florian Seroussi

This week's Gadget Talk is with Florian Seroussi, a well-known and well-respected innovator in the comms sector. Seroussi is an early adopter and social-media expert involved in various ventures including Teens in Tech and Twitterfone, as well as being CEO of Global Roaming Inc, makers of the Celtrek international SIM card.

What do you do for a living?
I'm CEO of Global Roaming Inc, a low-cost cellular telecom provider. I'm also a business angel in several tech start-ups. My full-time job remains father of five. :)

What gadgets are getting you hot under the collar right now?
Really getting excited about Linux ready-to-go operating systems such as Kubuntu and PCLinuxOS. There is a dormant revolution happening and no one is watching.

What's your desert island gadget?
My MacBook Air. Definitely my best companion.

Name and shame one gadget you would like to drop-kick into an abyss?

Blu-ray technology is so useless. I understood the change from VHS to DVD, but DVD to Blu-Ray is plain stupid. The human eye can't catch the difference. What's the point?

Have you an idea for a fantasy gadget that has yet to be invented? Or maybe some ideas for improving an existing one?
There is definitely a need to set ONE worldwide standard for electrical sockets/outlets. I can't believe I need a full bag of converters to hook up my devices when I travel. We are in 2009!

What was your first experience with gadgetry?
In 1980, my father brought a Sinclair ZX80 home - this PC had a clock speed of 3.25MHz and was equipped with 1KB of static RAM and 4KB of read-only memory. It was love at first sight.

I moved to Amstrad and Apple II in the following years, and I've never stopped upgrading since then.

Tell me about your first internet experience. (I still remember the excitement and anticipation when I hear the old internet dial-up tone!)

It was in 1993 when I discovered Efnet and IRC. It was more like a large forum of users: text conversation only. I was hooked, online 20 hours a day.

Yoda said that fear is the path to the dark side. What is the path to the dork side? Do you consider yourself a geek?

I remember being a geek every time my friends and family ask me for help. I have turned out to be a walking 24/7 customer support tech! Talking about dark side ...

What is the meaning of life?
Being a father of five ... life is about renewing itself.

And, as Albert Einstein said: "True religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness."
