Digging for Ire(land) with Beast.ie

Are we still sharing news? Why yes, more than ever before. Through services like Facebook, YouTube, Google Reader and in particular Digg.com, we swap, vote for and comment on the news that interests us.

While the internet is indeed a global place without borders there are still times we wish we could have a more local experience and this is what Beast.ie is targeted at: it is a social news site looking to get Irish interests catered for as well as highlighting Irish news sites and blogs on the web.

"There are some extremely high quality Irish blogs that don't get the readership that they deserve due to the fact that they are largely unknown. This is where I am hoping Beast.ie will come in," says Beast.ie co-founder Vincent Ryan.

"The goal of 'the beast' is to serve as a constantly updating guide to the Irish internet. It will not host content but merely links. It will direct its users to what is new and interesting on the web from an Irish perspective."

Beast.ie, rather like Digg.ie, requires you to register if you would like to submit stories (by URL) and there is the option to vote a story up or down as well as comment upon it.

You can view news by categories as well as by popularity and there is the option to create and participate in group discussions, see an overview of hot topics by tag cloud or browse by podcast alone.
