Napster expands online catalogue to 10m tracks

Formerly the Pirate Bay of 1999 to 2001, Napster was a P2P haven but has long gone legal in its music offerings and today it has announced it now holds 10 million music tracks, making it one of the largest online digital music libraries in the UK.
Napster users can now stream or download music from 790,000 artists and 980,000 albums through the music service, which was relaunched in May 2009 with a new US£5-per-month subscription whereby as much music as you want can be streamed while five MP3s can be downloaded to keep.
"The expansion of Napster's music catalogue to 10 million tracks demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering the complete package music service to Napster subscribers and our dedication to enabling music lovers to explore and discover new music online," said Thorsten Schliesche, Napster's vice-president of sales and marketing in Europe.
"Complimented by Napster's unique personalisation features, allowing users to tailor their music experience according to their own wants and needs, the new catalogue offers even more possibility for discovering great new music or old favourites, whether through Napster's unlimited streaming or by downloading tracks to keep.
"This step is a reflection of Napster's ongoing work with the industry and the labels to ensure that we continue to deliver the ultimate in online music, benefiting both our customers and the industry."
Schliesche has a point: Spotify may be the hot streaming music service of the moment but because we cannot get the mobile app, free version of offline mode here in Ireland it is actually better value to go for the Napster model for value and choice.
