Top 5 geek gadget gifts

Buying gift vouchers as a Christmas present is such a cop-out. There are so many cool gadgets out there to suit every taste and style. Here is a selection of the perfect geeky Christmas gadget gifts for the nerds you know and love.

1. Zero Blaster

zero blaster

€13.52 (converted from dollars on xe.com)

Every geek needs a gun. Not a real one, of course, but an uber-sciencey gizmo! The Zero Blaster won't vapourise your mortal enemy but it will shoot a vapour ring 2-4 inches in diameter, which will definitely set their expressions to stun.

It comes in three colours: blue, red and glow-in-the-dark green, and it emits a blue LED light as well as a ray-gun sound. Pew, pew.

The fluid that comes with the gun for creating the vapour rings is water-based and non-toxic, so no need to worry about accidentally shooting someone in the face.

lightsaber keychain

2. Star Wars Lightsaber Keychain

€5

The perfect stocking filler for the Star Wars nut in your life. This teeny tiny lightsaber also doubles as a handy torch and it comes in three varieties: Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Yoda.

If you get the Vader one and your friend gets the Luke one you can have an epic battle and wheeze a bit while saying, "Luke, I am your father." I did this with cardboard tubes and it's just not as fun.

periodic shoe

3. Periodic Table Shoes

€63.70

If you're a geek of the shoe-gazing indie variety, you need something more than plain sneakers to look at while ruminating over the complexities of our wonderful universe and why binary is actually the basis for a logical philosophy.

The periodic table shoes are the perfect solution. Look suitably alt-cool while memorising the properties of hydrogen, helium, lithium and so on.

Here's something I've been wondering, though ... can you wear these into a chemistry exam or does this constitute as cheating? (They only come in women's sizes)

4. Star Trek USB Communicator

Captain's Log: star date 09.12.2009. Does that ever get old?

This official Star Trek gadget is actually an internet phone so dump your old Skype headset and use this baby instead. It works with both the Mac and PC and can be used for Skype, iChat, Yahoo, MSN, Google Chat and other VoIP services.

It also has 21 Star Trek sound effects as well as a built-in speaker, microphone and earphone. The coolest thing about it is the fact it makes the classic Star Trek chirping sound. Breep bee-beep!

keybag

5. Keybag

€129.60 to €145.20

The Keybag is living proof that you can be geeky and girly at the same time. It's made from 393 actual keyboard keys and comes in red, white, black and hot pink.

This bag has been around since 2003, but seeing as it's quite geeky, it remains outside fashion so maybe we're looking at one of the few pieces of classic nerd couture here. If in doubt, buy this in white. The white keys with black lettering is pure style.
