Sony's PSP joins the Navy

When is a PSP games console not really a games console? When it's a training device for the British Royal Navy.

Sony's PSP (PlayStation Portable) has been chosen by the Navy as the training tool of choice for its sailors to help them study while at sea (and presumably get a bit of gaming in when they have time).

According to the Times, warfare engineering technicians will be the first to receive the PSPs and if this is a success they may be distributed to other sailors.

These specially commissioned PSPs come preloaded with lessons: lecture slides and audio commentaries, and in cramped conditions on board will free up space that could otherwise be taken up by textbooks.

However, it seems as though this high-tech approach isn't going to be using the latest PSPgo: the Times refers to the fact the UMD drive was originally going to be disabled but has been left for sailors to play games on so the latest UMD-free model of the PSP was not chosen. Perhaps best given that Wi-Fi connectivity for downloading games might not always be the best on a naval vessel.
