iPod touch getting camera?

When the iPod nano got a video camera on board back in September we were left scratching our heads in wonderment - why didn't the iPod touch get similar treatment? While it missed out on the first round, the touch could be getting a camera soon, it seems.
The "camera on the iPod touch" is one of these on-again, off-again rumours, but according to The Examiner the next iteration of the touch will have a camera and not one like the iPhone has; it will be the exact same model as that inside the iPod nano, which is a video camera only with no ability to take still images.
Slightly unconvincing rumour pics of the iPod touch show a camera positioned in the centre of the touch's back surface, unlike the top-right positioning on the iPhone.
Here's another interesting thought: if the iPod touch gets video recording then presumably it will have to come with an external microphone to record audio.
