Based on the popular Harry Potter films, the app aims to transform players into wizards, enabling them to stun and disarm their opponents, as well as cast 14 spells on them.

Fledgling wizards can conjure magic on their own or duel others by casting spells from one device to another using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections. "Students" will receive an official invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, then will make a ceremonial visit Ollivanders' wand shop, where the wand destined for them will meet its new master or mistress.

Once equipped, players are introduced to the Sorting Hat and placed into one of four houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin). Finally, after all that preparation, wizard training starts in the 'Spell Tutorial', where players learn the hand gestures required to cast a spell that can be used in a duel.

More advanced students may have an advantage when duelling friends, due to a larger repertoire of spells, but novice students can still emerge victorious by using their magic skills. It's game over for one player when their health meter is reduced to zero.

House points are rewarded to players' accomplishments, such as winning duels and mastering spells in practice mode. House points are combined with those earned by other players in the same house.

In the 'Profile' section, players can monitor statistics (accomplishments, games won and lost, their rank), a House Point Leaderboard (the top-ranked players in all houses) and an Overall Leaderboard (a showcase of the top Hogwarts students), as well as integrate profiles and scores on Facebook.  

The Harry Potter: Spells app is the only official Harry Potter game available on the Apps Store. It costs €3.33 at the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at the iTunes Store.
