Bosch enhances 'Night Vision'
16.11.2009

Scientists at Bosch have been busy sprucing up the night-vision system first installed in the 2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Night Vision gadget.
Night Vision Plus provides a high-contrast image of the road ahead of the vehicle and analyses what it picks up to identify and highlight pedestrians on the screen.
The system works by using an infrared camera, mounted behind the windscreen, that detects reflections from the car's infrared headlights. A control unit then processes the images and displays them on a screen on the instrument panel in front of the driver.
The control unit analyses the image on a pixel-by-pixel basis to detect whether objects are still or moving, from a distance of up to 150m away, which is three times further than conventional headlights.
The idea behind the gadget is to reduce road fatalities involving vehicles and pedestrians.
