Facebook provides option to 'memorialise' profiles

Facebook has announced it will give its members the option to "memorialise" the profiles of members who have died.

The move by the social-networking site follows some cases of members receiving updates about dead friends, BBC News Online reported.

Facebook will remove information, such as contacts and status updates, from profiles of users who have been reported as deceased. The site will also no longer have the person appear in the suggestions panel, which is designed to remind members to take actions with friends who may need help on Facebook.

Facebook wants proof of the death before making such changes, however, in the form of an obituary or news article.

To reflect the fact that when someone dies they remain in their loved ones' memories, Facebook has created the idea of memorial profiles, where friends and family members can share recollections of the person who has died.

Memorial accounts will have new privacy settings, so only confirmed friends can see the profile or find it in a search.
